Understanding trauma and its impact on our lives

Trauma is an experience that can profoundly impact our lives. It can take many forms: from severe events like accidents, the loss of a loved one, or violence, to more subtle but equally powerful experiences like chronic stress or the adjustment difficulties associated with emigration. Regardless of the form of trauma we experience, its impact on our emotions, thoughts, and behavior can be profound.

What is trauma?

Trauma is the mental and emotional burden that results from experiencing an event that exceeds our ability to cope. It can leave us feeling powerless, threatened, or completely out of control. Trauma reactions can include not only psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, or a sense of emptiness but also physical symptoms such as sleep problems, body tension, and difficulty concentrating.

Trauma affects how we perceive ourselves, others, and the world around us. It often changes our beliefs about ourselves and can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, or fear of intimacy. When trauma is not processed, it can negatively impact our daily lives, our relationships, and our ability to function in our professional and personal lives.

Types of trauma

  • Individual trauma: This is the result of an event that directly affected us, such as violence, an accident or the loss of a loved one.
  • Social trauma: This can occur as a result of systemic inequalities, societal violence, or experiences of racism, homophobia, or other forms of discrimination.
  • Transgenerational trauma: We often inherit the traumas of our ancestors. In the case of emigration, this may be trauma related to war, political violence, or other difficult historical events that impacted our families.
